Volunteer MUSIC MENTORS NEEDED for Youth in Foster Care (Austin & Surrounding Counties)
Kids in a New Groove (KING Mentoring) is seeking volunteer music mentors to provide free, weekly one-on-one music lessons to youth ages 5 and up who have experience with the child welfare system in Central Texas. Consistent, creative mentorship can be transformative. You do not need to be a professional musician—just reliable, encouraging, and willing to build a trusting relationship through music. Most of the youth referred to our program have no prior experience on the instrument they are hoping to learn. As a KING music mentor, you will be matched one-on-one with a mentee and meet weekly to provide private music lessons in the youth’s home or placement. KING Mentoring focuses not only on musical skill development, but also on connection, confidence-building, and creativity, while helping your mentee set and work toward their own musical goals. KING provides ongoing support and all instruments, equipment and materials needed for your mentee. To volunteer, prospective mentors must be at least 21 years old; live in or near Travis, Williamson, Hays, or Bastrop County; have a reliable vehicle; pass a background check; complete an interview and online mentorship training; and commit to mentoring for one year once matched with a youth. Youth are currently waiting to be matched with one-on-one music mentors in Austin, Cedar Park, Elgin, Dripping Springs, Hutto, Belton, Killeen, and Jarrell.
